PlasmaSeal PPC technology is remarkably simple to use. Depending on the extent of wounded area 10 to 100 cc of blood is withdrawn from the patient and immediately mixed with standard citrate anticoagulant. The platelet plasma is separated from whole blood by centrifugation, then it is concentrated by removing some of the salt water. This second step can be accomplished in many ways. A simple method, called hollow fiber concentration uses small tubes with special walls, which are porous to salt water but not to the larger proteins and platelets in blood. It is this basic procedure and two step method that is used in all our devices.
These are the devices available from PlasmaSeal:

Cebus - Semi-skilled operator involvement
Ateles - Semi-automated
Proteus - Totally automated

All of our devices use a two step method:

  1. Platelet plasma is separated from patient whole blood by centrifugation.
  2. The platelet plasma is concentrated by removing some of the salt water.

PlasmaSeal gives you the choice as to how simple you want the process to be. With all of PlasmaSeal's devices you will receive our PPC as the end product, ready to use in the PlasmaSeal applicator.

Cebus is PlasmaSeal's low cost, low volume alternative. Whole blood is drawn from the patient and the plasma is separated from whole blood by centrifugation in a standard clinical centrifuge. The plasma is transferred to the Cebus single use cartridge. The cartridge is then shaken, not stirred, for 30 seconds to activate the concentrating process. Finally, the cartridge is spun in the same centrifuge at 3000 rpm for 1 and 1/2 minutes. After this cycle is completed the PPC is ready to be removed from the Cebus cartridge and used in the applicator.

Attributes of Cebus:

  • Simple, inexpensive
  • Semi-skilled operator involvement
  • Product is single use cartridge preloaded with desiccant beads
  • Requires clinical centrifuge
  • Small volume alternative

Ateles is a scaleable device that works with virtually any volume of platelet plasma or buffy coat. The platelet plasma or buffy coat must be prepared independently using standard equipment and techniques. Starting volume and concentration factor can be chosen to suit each case.

Attributes of Ateles:

  • Semi-automated
  • Some operator involvement
  • Small disposable cartridge; simple peristaltic pump base unit
  • Requires clinical centrifuge or autotransfuser to obtain starting plasma
  • Adjustable volume and concentration factor

With PlasmaSeal's Proteus device the two steps are performed in sequence automatically. Whole blood is injected into Proteus' single use disposable cartridge and placed in the dual action base unit. The operator touches a button, and the cycle begins. The platelet plasma is separated by centrifugation. Then the integral syringe pump concentrates fibrinogen, platelets and all other clotting and wound healing factors by circulating the platelet plasma through concentrator fibers. In ten minutes the PPC is ready for use. Proteus devices can be engineered to process 50 to 120 cc of whole blood, producing 6 to 15 cc of PPC.

Attributes of Proteus:

  • Totally automated push button operation
  • Minimal operator involvement
  • Single-use, fixed volume cartridge including hollow fiber concentrator
  • Dual action base unit with centrifuge and syringe pump
  • PPC preloaded in syringe at end of cycle
  • Fixed volume; 50 to 120 cc whole blood for 6 to 15 cc of PPC

The Plasmaseal applicator can be used with all of Plasmaseal's devices. When the PPC is ready, it is loaded into the PlasmaSeal sealant applicator. PlasmaSeal's Applicator is an easy-to-use coaxial design. The inner chamber of the applicator is loaded with calcium/thrombin solution while the PPC is sequestered in a separate outer coaxial chamber. PPC is now ready to dispense, as a liquid stream, as an aerosol, or drop-by-drop for fine applications. By depressing a single plunger the two solutions are automatically and thoroughly mixed in precisely the correct proportion. The liquid mixture gels in seconds to minutes, depending on the thrombin activity chosen by the provider.

A further advantage to the PlasmaSeal devices beyond simple elegance and ease of use is the utility in numerous medical specialties. Anywhere there is a need to stop bleeding and start healing, whether it be the dentist's office or a major orthopedic suite, PlasmaSeal has an easy to use device that's the right size and the right cost, right now.

  • It is autologous, with no risk of disease transmission
  • It is stat, and can be made without leaving the operating room
  • It has adhesive strength as good as other products on the market
  • It is a good hemostatic agent
  • And it is less expensive than alternatives
