PlasmaSeal has designed three devices (called Cebus, Ateles, and Proteus) that produce Platelet Plasma Concentrate from the patient's own blood. From a regulatory perspective PPC is an autologous blood product.

There are two types of biologics, and in the table below you can see what falls into each class as well as the qualities of each class.

TISSUE DERIVED

  • Solid tissue (DBM - demineralized bone matrix, porcine heart valve)
  • Blood
    • Heterologous (blood bank)
    • Autologous (intraoperative processing)

Qualities of tissue derived products are as follows:

  • Mixture of proteins
  • Living cells and platelets
  • Multiple uses
  • Labile (stable for hours)
  • Inexpensive
    • Starting material "free"
    • Cost of processing only

PURE PROTEIN

Pure protein manufactured using recombinant DNA cloning and/or mammalian cell culture (e.g., interferons or BMPs)

Qualities of purified proteins are as follows:

  • Pure protein
  • Cell free
  • Narrow use
  • Stable
  • Expensive
    • FDA review
    • GMP manufacturing

PlasmaSeal's philosophy is to work with nature rather than to try to outsmart her. Biological processes are very complex. Even the best understood bio-mechanisms yield new complexities in further study. Rather than discerning every detail about hemostasis and healing and artificially manipulating these complex processes we take nature's own mix and concentrate it. The result is an inexpensive method that produces a product that is inherently safe.

There are other products on the market that make "platelet gel" (as opposed to our "platelet plasma concentrate"). One may ask what is the difference between these two. Let's take a look:

PPC

  • Up to 10x platelets
  • Up to 5x platelet proteins
  • Trace RBCs
  • No WBCs
  • Gel firm
  • Hemostat comparable to fibrin sealant (e.g. Tisseel™)

PLATELET GEL

  • 2x to 6x platelets
  • 1x plasma proteins
  • Trace RBCs
  • Variable WBCs
  • Gel runny
  • Poor hemostasis

Platelets and plasma contain the factors that stop bleeding and start healing. Platelets provide the signals to recruit the body's hemostasis and wound healing machinery, while plasma provides the inroads for this machinery. RBC's job is to transport oxygen so they have little effect on healing. White blood cells cause inflammation and are best excluded.

Studies performed at a leading hemostasis company show that 3X platelet-plasma concentrate stops bleeding as well as the largest selling biologic hemostat, purified fibrinogen (Baxter's Tisseel™).

It is clear that our product is the superior choice. The key advantages are:

  • Autologous, stat, user-friendly, intuitive
  • Contains ALL blood growth factors
    • Platelets, all plasma proteins
    • Same proportions as natural wound healing
  • Inexpensive
    • Raw material "free" (patient blood)
    • No rDNA research, production and regulatory expenses
  • Attractive properties of gel
    • Hemostatic
    • Moldable
    • Adhesive to tissue
  • Best autologous blood product patent estate (e.g., US Patent 6,214,338)

Finally there is a product on the market that is a simple and natural accelerant of hemostasis and wound healing. The medical professional wants to provide the best care possible with the least complication and the patient wants the peace of mind that their own blood is being used to heal their own body. PlasmaSeal provides both.
